Substantial amounts are available from the UK and EU for companies of all sizes for innovation and business expansion. E.g. the SME Instruments scheme can fund up to 50% of qualifying project costs. Similarly, the Horizon 20:20 programme provides billions of Euros in funding for companies. These funds are available to companies in the UK.
The European Commission has been promoting R&D and innovation as far back as the 1980’s when it opened its First Framework programme (FP1).
This has been followed by a number of successor programmes to reach the current Horizon 2020 (H2020) programme. UK organisation can still benefit from the many calls under H2020 which are largely collaborative in form but also have competitions specific to single SMEs including the SME Instrument tools with its three support phases. There are also a number of adjacent funding programmes from the EC including LIFE which promotes environmental solutions and Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) which promotes growth, jobs and competitiveness through targeted infrastructure investment at European level.
The UK government and a number of other funding bodies provide grants to companies for a number of different purposes including R&D, Job creation, Training, Expansion and Sector specific – such as clean energy.
